Speed The Plough

Speed The Plough, Barton Le Clay

The Speed The Plough was situated on the A6 near Barton Le Clay. This pub closed in 2006.

I worked at the National Institute of Agricultural Engineering 1960 – 63. On New Years Eve 1962 friends from West Park Lodge, attached to NIAE, spent the evening there. We had a great time and did the usual kissing of all and sundry. Outside, however, was not so good. It was the start of a snow blizzard. Somehow we got back to Silsoe, probably not under todays drink limit, but for days after that the road was blocked and it was the start of the great freeze of 1963. The lakes of the park were completely frozen over and one could walk on top of the snow. The thaw came around early March and trailer loads of fish were pulled out of the lakes having frozen or died through lack of oxygen.
