The Anchor was situated on the Great North Road.  This was a grade-II listed pub that is now used as a private members club.
From The Good Pub Guide 1983:
The spacious and sheltered garden alongside the River Ouse makes this an attractive break from the Great North Road, with an adventure playground for children, outdoor chess or draughts and even day tickets for fishing. Inside is relaxing too, with a modern mix of flagstones, bare brick walls, a big free-standing stove, red button-back leatherette wall banquettes, stools and cushioned captain's chairs. One end has a slightly Scandinavian airportish design, with carpet, a high planked ceiling (and one of those slowly circling tropical fans) and a big curved window looking out into the garden. Space games, bar billiards, table football, darts and a fruit machine. Bar food includes sandwiches and filled rolls (from 45p), ploughman's (75p), salads (from £1.30), including smoked mackerel £1.55) and - at lunchtime only - hot casseroles and pies (£1.55); Everards Tiger, Greene King IPA, Manns IPA and Ruddles County on handpump. The separate restaurant is open for breakfast as well as other meals, and serves children's helpings; there is also a children's room.
Listed building details:
House, formerly The Anchor Inn. C17 and C18, Timber framed construction, mostly cased in colourwashed brick. Clay tile roof. 2 storeyed, 3-room plan. SW elevation: both floors have 3 3-light casement windows. LH ground floor windows flank a single light, apparently replacing a doorway. This is almost in line with brick double ridge stack. Plank door between 2 RH bays. External brick stack to RH gable end. Small lean-to addition to rear.
