The Lion was situated on
Barford Road. This pub was built as a farm cottage in the early 15th
century. It was a Beer House from 1828 but fully licenced by 1838 and
remained so until 1908. There were only three landlords in the 80 years
thatr the premises were in operation. George Mayes was the first tenant and
he was followed by his son John. George Peet took over in 1885 and was still
there when it closed. An application to re licence the Lion was submitted to
the Bedford Licensing Justices in March 1908 when a new Landlord Mr. C.
Wells was to take over from George Peet, then 76 years of age and who had
been the landlord for 28 years. This Application was refused as the
Justices, supported by the Quarter Sessions later that month decided that
six Public House in a village of 318 population was not necessary. [Two new
Public Houses had recently been constructed and opened and The Lion being
the oldest was considered the least commodious of them all.] The Lion closed
soon after when compensation was paid to the owner. |
