The Volunteer

Date of photo: 1938

The Volunteer was situated on Crookham Common. This pub was demolished in 1940 to make way for Greenham Common airbase. It was present by 1872 when it was called The Rifle Volunteer.  Its name may have been connected with the use of Greenham and Crookham Commons for military manouevres and training; to the south of the pub lay a shooting practice area.
