The Silchester Arms, popularly known as The Jackdaw, was situated on the Devil's Highway (a lost road in its own right). It started in a farmhouse as a bar providing ale for the navvies building railways in the mid nineteenth century and around 1859 was kept by Jos Coggins. It closed around 1950 and is now in residential and/or industrial use.
