The Castle was situated
at 25
Northbrook Street. This was a grade-II listed
pub. |
|
This was the brewery tap for the Newbury Brewery
Company. When it closed the building was subdivided; the Northbrook Street
frontage became Zales, the rear of the building became The Captains Cabin,
later Uncle Henrys. Uncle Henrys closed in 2007 following a fire, however
was due to be demolished to make way for the new Parkway shopping centre. |

My parents ran the Castle Tavern back
in the early 1980s. I remember all the stories of how haunted the pub was
and you could hear the barrels rolling around in the bar as the barrel store
was upstairs. My mum also witnessed a robbery at zales the jewellers. It was
a squaddie pub and when mum and dad left they had christmas in september for
all the regulars. |
