Pheasant Inn

The Pheasant Inn was situated on Village Road. This pub closed in 2008.

When I first knew this pub around 1976 it was simply a good old-fashioned boozer with a dartboard and Formica covered tables, selling excellent Wethered's Bitter and the odd sandwich to a fairly undemanding crowd of the less well-heeled villagers and local farmworkers. Of course, given its location, this wasn't going to last and Whitbread off-loaded the pub to the free trade, at which point both the number of real beers and the amount of food on offer (not to mention the annual income of its customers) multiplied. It briefly gained an enviable reputation for its food, but several changes of ownership later it is a closed up shell with the villagers aspiring to buy the premises and the last owner steadfastly hoping to convert it into residential property. At present a Mexican stand-off reigns. It may re-open but don't hold your breath.
