The Bernard Arms was situated on
Risborough Road, next to the church and had been in existence since the
1930s. Due to its proximity to the Prime Minister's country residence
Chequers, several world leaders enjoyed a drink there over the years,
including Dwight D. Eisenhower, Ronald Reagan, Boris Yeltsin and John
Howard. The pub closed its doors at the end of 2011. Originally called The
Bear & Cross. |

under various names, it provided
refreshment for (at least) the past 300 years. Known first as "The Chequers"
from its proximity to the western gate of the Chequers Estate, it became
"The Bernard Arms" with the purchase of the manor of Great Kimble by Sir
Scrope Bernard. More familiarly it became known as "The Bear & Cross", from
the emblems of the Bernard and related Tyringham families, before reverting
to The Bernard Arms again when re-established as a hotel/pub in the 1920s. |
