The Anchor was situated at 7 Crown Lane. This
pub is now used as a lounge bar called The Snug. |

I drank in there during the late 70's and early
80's. There were two bars, the one to the left was sometimes called the
wizards bar and the one to the right the paddies bar. The wizards bar was
mainly bikes (or greasers) and on a Saturday you sometimes could walk
through the bar as it was so crowded. The landlord at the time was called
Dennis as far as I can remember was an ex-copper.
I also remember there being record sleeves on the ceiling and a record
player behind the bar before the juke box was fitted. When Dennis left in
the 80's the new landlord chose to get rid of all the bikers and the pub
became very quiet. I remember returning there on a Saturday lunch time and
they'd ripped out the old bar and basically in my opinion ruined the pub.
Haven't been back there since then. |
