The Gate was situated on Lilys Walk. This pub was demolished to make way for the Eden Shopping Centre.
I was saddened to discover on your website that the Gate pub was demolished to make way for the Eden shopping centre.
I am a radiographer and live in Cumbria but I grew up in High Wycombe from the age of 5 until I Ieft to go to university. When I finished my radiography training my first job in 1988 was at Wycombe hospital. At the time I lived in north London but soon moved into hospital staff residence on Marlow Hill. The nearest pub was The Gate.
And so the mayhem soon started. I had two good friends at the time, Rick and Mike, both radiographers. Mike was a guitarist in a band.
If you have ever seen the movie Hot Fuzz starring Nick Frost and Simon Pegg, after a shift at work Nick would ask Simon, "what are you doing this evening? pub?" It was exactly the same for the three of us spending all week at the Gate and often finishing an evening drinking with a trip to KFC.
Mike's band performed at the Gate occasionally during 1989 and 1990 and the place was heaving.
The landlord at the time was energetic and full of enthusiasm for filling the place.
I also met a wonderful student nurse at the Gate but that was short lived.
It was a fantastic period of my life centered on the Gate pub but it was sadly all over too soon as I left Wycombe Hospital late in 1990 to get a job in London, something I have regretted ever since.
