The Hen & Chickens was situated at 7-8 Church
Street.
Despite the ornate finery of the gables, this building as it
stands was never actually a pub. A terracotta
plaque at the front of the building states that it was established in 1775
however this relates to the previous building on the site which housed the
businesses of JG Peace, Collins tea and coffee warehouse and The Hen and
Chickens public house. After rebuilding in 1888 the building may have the
name of the old pub on it but the premises were never used as a pub. |
