The Red Lion was situated on the High Street.
This pub was demolished in the 1960s to be replaced by a Woolworths store.
It currently houses Iceland and Poundland stores. Disraeli made his
first political speech from a portico over the door here. |

The following is taken from a 1930s Wills
cigarette card: |
'One of the oldest coaching houses in the
county, the Red Lion has become famous through its association with Benjamin
Disraeli, afterwards Earl Of Beaconsfield. It was from the projecting
portico of the Red Lion that the great statesman made his first speech in
1832. Patting the head of the fearsome 'Red Lion' he is reputed to have said
"When the poll is declared I shall be here and my opponent will be there"
(indicating the tail) Early history of the Red Lion is connected with
Brasenose College and that part of the house which formed the ancient inn
still belongs to the College. While retaining its 16th century charm, the
Red Lion has many modern improvements. The new banqueting hall contains fine
examples of the craftsmanship of High Wycombe's master furniture builders'. |
