The pub was named after Edward of
Woodstock, Prince of Wales and the eldest son of King Edward III. He was
known after his death as the 'Black Prince'. He was granted ownership of the
'royal manor' of Princes Risborough in 1344, but died before his father and
so never became king.
Since being demolished in 2016, this ex-pub has been replaced by a row of
town houses, one of which I co-own.
I have a further connection and fond memories of the pub itself as I used to
play football for the pub team (Black Prince FC) in the Wycombe Sunday
Combination in the late 1990s. We played on a great pitch in nearby Monks
Risborough, and afterwards would head to the pub for roast potatoes and a
few pints. I forget the landlord's name at that time, but he was a super
chap and the pub had a really nice feel to it. |
