The Horse & Groom was situated on Bath
Road. First noted in 1761 as "One Mile House" and then as "Mile House" in
1790, its name derived not from its distance from anywhere in particular,
but rather in that 'mile' meant 'mill' and its stream was powerful enough to
drive a waterwheel. It survived until the 1860s when George Hanbury (of
brewers Truman, Hanbury & Buxton) dammed this stream to create a pond in the
garden of his new home "Blythewood" (now "Hitcham House"). The mill may
already have been brewing ale so its reinvention as a pub was a natural
progression. A Grade II listed building, it changed name again to "The Horse
& Groom" before finally closing in 1990. It became a pre-school nursery in
the mid-1990s. |
