This has gone through a few name changes over the years and is now used as a kitchen/bar.

I was there in 2014 when it was a bar / restaurant, not too exciting and I was one of only three customers on a Friday evening. Closed December 2015, as of March 2016 it was completely empty and up for sale.

In 1976/1977 The great Northern was one of Cambridge’s few Non-University music venues. It was for a while the base of the ‘Cambridge Arts Lab,’ which put on nights of music and poetry. Once A month, I think. I performed there with acoustic guitar in late 1976. They also put on more established local bands, and in 1977 it was the venue for early gigs by The Soft Boys, who were one of Cambridge’s most memorable bands of that era. Leader Robyn Hitchcock went on to some fame with Robyn Hitchcock & The Egyptians, and he still tours today. The pub was a bit ramshackle, no sound system - you had to provide your own, I seem to remember. We liked it because it had a very open policy with its bookings, and cheapish beer. Students rarely visited, it was very a much a town pub.
