Church Inn, Stockport

The Church Inn was situated on Moseley Street.

This was one of the most popular pubs in Stockport in the 1970's and was full every afternoon and evening. It was ran by the Clifford family and was the starting point for the Edgeley pram race and was the main place for all the street parties. Including the queens jubilee.

My great great great grandfather, Samuel Birkett (born in 1855), owned the pub originally. He was a successful businessman in the area and was a co-creator of the company Birkett and Bostock Ltd.

I used to live at The Greyhound Inn opposite. I am the son of James and Phoebe Hopwood who were the owners of the Clarkes Brewery pub. I was born in 1938 and moved into the Greyhound in 1939/40. The Church Inn was run by the Smith family George and May,with a small child May. May the mother was the sister of my mother Phoebe.

Dean Robinson 1960/1970 The Church was owned by my Grandparents, Aida and Joseph Clifford,ex naval officer. After Joe past away my Auntie Pat and Aida ran the pub.Always full of characters anytime of the day. Littlemore AFC used it after games, Aida would cook a massive pot of Ham shank soup.
