Crown Inn

The Crown Inn was situated at 17-19 Millgate.
My great-grandfather, John Scott, was the publican in 1871. Prior to 1876 it had been known as the Red Bull, next door to the Arden Arms.  It closed around 1900, was demolished, and part of the site then became Harrops pork butchers.  According to Ogden's 'History of Stockport Breweries' the pub was licensed around 1824.  James Carter was the landlord until 1842, followed by James Worsley and then Thomas Sutton, who became insolvent in 1848.  Brewing ceased before 1855, when Tetley's ales were on sale.  The Red Bull was renamed the Crown in 1876.
