In 1962 my mother told me that when my
great grandfather got too drunk to go home he used to go to a dosshouse that
was behind (or attached to) The Three Tuns, and the doss house had the
traditional rope that people paid 1 penny to throw their arms over (to prop
themselves up (it was cheaper than paying for a mattress), this is where the
saying “I could go to sleep on a washing line” came from
When I was a kid in 1960s I remember this pub was just about still open but
there was nothing else around it as all the 2 up 2 downs houses had been
demolished to make way for carparking for the renamed half of Heaton lane
that became Princess Street |
