Three Tuns Inn

The Three Tuns Inn was situated at 15 Hatton Street. This pub has now been demolished.

In 1962 my mother told me that when my great grandfather got too drunk to go home he used to go to a dosshouse that was behind (or attached to) The Three Tuns, and the doss house had the traditional rope that people paid 1 penny to throw their arms over (to prop themselves up (it was cheaper than paying for a mattress), this is where the saying “I could go to sleep on a washing line” came from
When I was a kid in 1960s I remember this pub was just about still open but there was nothing else around it as all the 2 up 2 downs houses had been demolished to make way for carparking for the renamed half of Heaton lane that became Princess Street
