The Cornish Arms was situated on Old Portreath Road. This pub is now in residential use.

This year, I received a tape of people singing at The Cornish Arms, Sparnon Gate, Illogan in 1971. I have now digitised it and hope to submit the audio to the Cornish National Music Archive. Here’s the information I had about it from the lady who sent the tape:

Singers at the Cornish Arms, Sparnon Gate, Illogan 1971
Tape recorded by Susan Thorpe, who came down on holidays to Illogan with her family

‘Mr and Mrs Daniels lived in the pub (Mrs Daniels being the licensee). They had a dog called Nipper who gave a bark on the recording. The locals met on a Thursday evening to sing (Going up Camborne Hill, coming down, Little Eyes I love you etc) and on a Sunday evening they also sang some hymns.
Pete and Mac were amongst the singers. They sang I know an old lady, Mrs Daniels, the licensee with her husband and their son Maelin/ Malon. I’m not that sure how you spelled his name. I remember it being very unusual at the time.
It must have been a Sunday I recorded the singing which is why there were so many hymns. There were more locals in on a Sunday than Thursday evenings, which was the other night they sang’.
