The Red Lion
was situated at 4 Marlborough Street. The pub was demolished along with
The Ship during the 1950s town clearance
programme to make way for a block of
flats. This was one of the pubs “ visited “ by the militia of the failed
John Paul Jones raiding party on our harbour on 22nd April 1778. Although
they managed to spike the guns of the Half Moon Battery situated on South
Shore , they failed to destroy the reported 400 vessels at berth in the
harbour when their candles were soaked in torrential rain… and ended up in
this pub boozing! |
