The Green Man & Blacks Head Royal Hotel
was situated on St John Street. This 18th century coaching inn was
originally the Green Man. It changed its name in the 1820s when it
amalgamated with the Blackamoor’s Head inn that was next door. “Royal Hotel”
was added when the future Queen Victoria stopped there for a comfort break
in 1830. The pub was closed for about eight years. The building was
redeveloped and re-opened as the Green Man in 2018. The original bar areas
are now in retail use, the new bar and restaurant is in the old brewery
building down the courtyard.
The old pub sign, which is Grade II* listed, is not owned by the pub. The
head on the sign was removed in June 2020 for safekeeping following a
petition for it to be taken down. |
