Marquis Of Granby

The Marquis Of Granby was situated on Hathersage Road. This pub has now been demolished.

Back in the sixties, regulars would move into the Olympic bar at closing time where we were assured the landlord would tell the police we were residents. It wasn’t necessary because the police would arrive at the back door where they would down a pint and the landlord would phone the Yorkshire Bridge to warn them they were next.

From The Good Pub Guide 1983:
It is the cocktail bar which distinguishes this substantial old inn. The glory of this small, opulently elegant room is the elaborately carved panelling salvaged from the SS Olympic which was the Titanic's sister ship, and said by some to have been the most comfortable liner of its time. The rest of the furnishings in this room support the twenties-afloat feel: silvery plush brocade seats on a black and gold swirly carpet, dim fringed bracket-lamps, heavy brown striped velvet curtains, and soft jazz. An ordinary outer bar has pool, darts, juke box and fruit machine, and from time to time the hotel puts on various special events. Ploughman's, a good choice of sandwiches, pizza, steak, seafood platter, gammon and other meals with chips are served; there's also a separate restaurant (closed on Mondays). A big lawn with old-fashioned slatted wooden seats by neat gravel paths skirts the wooded River Derwent.

Richard Jacques-Turner 1956/1959 Bar-cellarman; restaurant manager.  I still have fond memories of my time there.
Ian Wilkinson 1990s There was a function room with Oak paneling, carpets and various decorations from The RMS Olympic. The bedrooms were the bedroom furniture from the Olympic and there were lots of lanterns and life rings bought when the Olympic was scrapped. As the pub is now demolished does anyone know what happened to all the Olympic memorabilia?
