The Great Northern was situated at 17-19 Junction Street. This pub was built around 1874 as the Jolly Soldier, named after the nearby Rowditch Barracks which were built in 1859 to house the Derbyshire Volunteer Rifle Corps. After they closed in 1877 the pub was renamed the Great Northern after the railway line which had just been built nearby. In the 1930's it was an Altons house and run by the family of legendary England, Derby County and Middlesbrough footballer Steve Bloomer. He died at the pub on April 16th 1938 . The pub was closed in 2011 and is currently being turned into a house.
