The Travellers Rest was situated on
Station Road. This pub appears to have been also known concurrently at The
Jolly Sailor. The two names also appear in official documents.
The Travellers Call or Jolly Sailor closed in 1908 under the terms of the
Licensing Act of 1904, sometimes known as the Compensation Act, a government
attempt to reduce the number of beerhouses and pubs. Licensees were
compensated for their loss of livelihood. The licence renewal for this
beerhouse was refused on the grounds that this was a disorderly house.
This beerhouse had been built in 1839 by Joseph Wild of Disley. He died in
1844 leaving on his land, a beerhouse, The Traveller’s Call, a cottage and a
shop with an engraving shop above. His two sons shared the property. James
Wild took on the balance of the mortgage and ought out his brother Elias’s
share of the estate.
The mortgage was bought out in 1864 by William and Joseph Holt, hop
merchants and brewers of Cheetham Hill. Holts had been founded in 1849 and
by 1882 owned 20 houses
Holts sold the beerhouse in 1907 for £375 to Elizabeth Roberts, who had been
licensee for some years and who was to remain in residence until 1924.
The Rate books and nuisance book lists this pub as being owned by Joseph
Holt of Manchester between 1881 and 1906. Holts had been founded in 1849 and
by 1882 owned 20 houses
The rate book shows that Elizabeth Roberts, the previous licensee owned the
property between 1909 and 1922 and continued to live there.
The building was then occupied by Reuben Wharmby who opened it as a shop,
transferring his greengrocery business from nearby Furness Row.
The building is currently a private house. |
