Devonshire Arms

The Devonshire Arms was present by 1829 when the publican was Thomas Gyte. This pub was run by four generations of the Gyte family until closure in 1972. A single room farmhouse pub.

I used to visit this pub in the late 1960s and early 1970s. There was just one rather dark room with no bar or handpumps. The elderly landlady used to fetch beer from the barrel in a large ceramic jug, which she then poured into smaller jugs with spouts, for customers to drink from. There was a choice of size of jug, either pint or quart.
