The Coach and Horses was situated on
Start Lane which was once the main road between Macclesfield and Whaley
Bridge This road incorporated a very steep climb from Kishfield Bridge in
Kettleshulme up to Start Lane. In 1770 work started to build a turnpike road
along the route of the current B5470 to make the journey much more
comfortable for horse drawn traffic. The Coach and Horses no longer had
sufficient passing trade and was closed after the opening of the new
turnpike road. The Innkeeper in 1791 was Henry Johnson. The original
building on Start Lane is now a private dwelling. |
