The Golden Fleece was situated on St Lawrence Lane. This pub has now been converted to a house. Reputedly occupied the site of Bishop Stapledon's palace and named for the town's former wool trade. George and then Elizabeth Perkins were publicans until 1865 and 1886 respectively. Elizabeth was stated to have been there for 50 years. The Knapmans followed, then William Stagg and Samuel Lock.  Built c1760, supposedly from the timbers of the Golden Fleece which ran aground while being towed to Plymouth for scrapping. It closed in 1939.
