The Hearts Of Oak was situated at 70 Boutport
Street. This grade-II listed pub
closed in the late 1990s and was later used as a bistro called La Spirit,
then a restaurant called the Southgate. After the Southgate closed in 2022
it became an Asian restaurant. |

building details: |
Public house. Early C19. Solid
rendered walls. Hipped, slated roof. Red brick chimney on side wall to
Maiden Street. 3 storeys. One-window range to Boutport Street, one window on
the broad rounded corner, and 5 windows to Maiden Street. Ground storey to
Boutport Street and on the corner rebuilt in mid/late C20 tiles.
Upper-storey windows have barred sashes: 6 over 9 panes in 2nd storey to
Boutport Street with 3 over 6 panes above; 8 over 12 panes on 2nd-storey
corner with 4 over 8 panes above. Boxed, moulded eaves cornice, this
continuing round 2 bays of the Maiden Street front. Latter has 3 windows
with small-paned sashes in each of the upper storeys. The building occupies
an important position at the junction of Boutport Street and High Street. |
