The Royal Oak was a 17th century pub in the middle of the
village. During World War II it was popular with Americans as the US Navy
air base (the only one in Britain ) was just up the road; now it is
Dunkeswell aerodrome. In 2010 planning permission was refused to convert the
pub into a dwelling but was overturned on appeal. A committee of local
residents was formed to try and buy the pub and run it as a community
venture, this failed mainly because of opposition from the owner. The pub
closed in 2011 and will be converted into a house. |
