building details: |
Row of 3 cottages and public house.
Possibly late C15, remodelled in C17 and with later alterations. Whitewashed
rendered rubble and cob. Slate roof with gable end to left and. 4 tall brick
stacks to rear, one of the stacks rebuilt in C20. 3 single cell cottages and
public house adjoining to right. 2-storeys, 9-window range. Nos 1-3 have 3
C19 windows from left a 2-light casement and 2 horizontal
sliding sash windows flanking 2 blind window openings. Three half-glazed
doors with 2-light casements 6-panes per light flanking doors to Nos 1 and 2
and 2-light casement 3-panes per light to left of No. 3. C20 fenestration to
Ring 0' Bells. Stop chamfered beams to No. 1 and 3. Interesting roof
structure with continuous roof structure of 9 bays over Nos 1-3 and part of
Ring of Bells comprising 8
trusses with apparently straight principals with the trusses over Nos 1-3
retaining cranked collars tenoned into the soffit mortices to of each
principal, with mortice holes in the 3 trusses to the Ring 0' Bells. Each of
the 9 bays retains 2 tiers of threaded purlins with sets of identical curved
windbraces to each of the tiers. Lath and plaster partition beyond the eight
truss then 2 replacement trusses with a further 3 trusses, comprising raised
cruck trusses with 1 retaining its cranked collar, towards the right end of
the Ring 0' Bells. No sign of smoke-blackening. The roof structure suggests
that originally the row originally formed 2 adjoining late medieval houses,
with the division towards the left end of the Ring 0' Bells, but subsequent
alterations have obscured the individual plans. |
