This pub was bought by Vallance’s Sidmouth brewery in the
1920’s, who were taken over by Devenish (Weymouth) in 1958. It remained a
Devenish house until it closed in 1985. It is now a private house that still
retains one of the bar windows (see below) |

I lived in North Street where the pub
was situated (from 1974 until it closed). I rarely went into the pub itself
but did go occasionally for off-sales into the area now an entranceway to
the house. There was a hatchway which was opened to serve customers, and I
think the area might have had doors on in the past. Locals called off-sales
'jug and bottle'. An area behind and slightly to the side of the pub was
reputedly an animal pound in the past. |
