The
Bedford Vaults
was situated
off Old Town Street. This pub
was previously known as The Bedford Inn. First listed in 1885, it was closed
and demolished in the mid 1960s. |

In 1956 I
was a young Chief petty officer in the Royal Navy. I discovered this pub and
in the cocktail bar at the back. I spent many hours in peace there . Just me
and the bar girl. My wife had died suddenly when I was at sea and I needed
to get away from the naval crowd and the mess deck, The Vaults were a real
godsend. I am now 86 and still remember the pub with thanks |
