Crown & Sceptre
|
|
|
The
Crown & Sceptre was situated on Buckwell Street. This pub was destroyed
during an air raid in 1941. |
|
In 1914 James Peters was the
licenced beer seller and lived there with his family. "Jimmy" Peters was
England's first ever black international rugby player, back in 1906, playing
5 games for England. He played for Plymouth RFC. at what is now the Astor
playing fields. He came from a background of extreme poverty, the circus and
orphanages. His life story is amazing ! He was also a carpenter in Devonport
Dockyard and elsewhere. |
