Crown & Sceptre

The Crown & Sceptre was situated on Buckwell Street. This pub was destroyed during an air raid in 1941.

In 1914 James Peters was the licenced beer seller and lived there with his family. "Jimmy" Peters was England's first ever black international rugby player, back in 1906, playing 5 games for England. He played for Plymouth RFC. at what is now the Astor playing fields. He came from a background of extreme poverty, the circus and orphanages. His life story is amazing ! He was also a carpenter in Devonport Dockyard and elsewhere.
