The Laira Inn
was situated at Marsh Mills and was present by 1850. It closed in the 1950s
and was demolished to make way for road expansion. |

This pub was situated in the "Dip" in
Laira. The current road runs over it as it was all filled in when the new
road went in along the Embankment. It was situated below the road bridge and
Blagdon's Boat yard was on the other side of the bridge. The china clay
horse drawn tramway used to run passed the pub from under the bridge and
used to cross the main rail link into Plymouth at the end of the street
(although it was not in operation at the time we lived there). My parents
ran this pub for 9 months before moving up to the Railway Inn at Mutley. We
lived there in the early Seventies may be late sixties. |

Used to be taken there when I was four or five. There was a counter
sales in the foyer. If we were lucky my sister and I would get a bar of
fruit and nut and a bottle of coke bought for us. Used to have an
elephants foot bin in the corner of the foyer, |
