Mid C19, C20 extensions. Plastered
stone rubble; stone rubble or brick stacks topped with C19 brick; slate
roof. Plan: the house faces north-west. It is set back from the street and
built above it on a terrace. The main house has a double depth plan
containing a front and back room either side of a central through passage
which also contains the main stair in the rear section. The rooms are heated
by gable-end stacks. C20 restaurant and hotel extension to rear and right.
The right wing is probably converted from the original stables and service
wing. It is 2 storeys with cellars. Exterior: main block has a symmetrical
3-window front of 16-panes arranged around a central doorway which contains
a 6-panel door and overlight with glazing bars, panelled reveals and a flat
roofed timber porch with tapering panelled posts and a moulded entablature.
The plaster is lightly incised as ashlar. Deep eaves are carried on a series
of shaped brackets. The roof is gable-ended. Each end wall contains a
central first floor window with pointed head. Interior still contains a
great deal of original joinery and other detail including an open string
geometric stair with stick balusters. |
