The New Tavern was situated at 19c Fore Street, next door to the Dove Inn, and was originally a private house. By 1931 it had become Trumps restaurant, Trumps was a local grocery shop that had branches in Sidmouth and Ottery St Mary. Then it became Fortes restaurant which was part of a chain of restaurants started by Charles Forte in 1935. It didn’t become a pub until 1960 when it was called The Tavern, later becoming The New Tavern and part of Carinas night club that adjoins the rear of the building. It closed in 2009.
