The Bird In Hand was situated at 15 Lower Brook Street. This
pub was present by 1850 and was damaged during WWII. It has now been
demolished, the site being part of a Waitrose car park. |

My maternal grandparents Lewis and Annie Vooght
kept the Bird in Hand during the war years. My grandfather died in 1954 when
I was only three years old,but I recall my grandmother telling me of the
time the pub was bombed. Apparently they had gone out to tea with friends
when the bomb hit. Lucky them. I see his name is above the door. |
