Ring Of Bells

The
Ring Of Bells was
situated at the junction of South Street and Coopers Hill.
This pub was destroyed by fire in 1968. |

I now live in Winkleigh but first visited in the
late 1980's by which time the Ring Of Bells was but a memory. However, back
in 1966 (approx) it was a prize in a competition in the Daily Sketch
newspaper which I can recall being reported on elsewhere at the time. I can
remember being puzzled and wondering what anyone would do if they were to
win such a thing - I was 14-ish at the time.
The vacant area of land where it stood is evident. There is now a gateway to
the churchyard which was added after the pub burned down - when the Ring of
Bells was there, the only access to this side of the churchyard was up the
steps from Dial Street. |
