The Wellington Inn was situated at 88
Long Street. This pub closed in the 1870s and has now been demolished. |

This was originally called The Three
Pigeons, but had been renamed after the Iron Duke by 1809. It closed and was
demolished in around 1875, probably following a fire. In 1881, it was
replaced by a new building owned by the Sherborne Coffee Tavern Company
Limited. It had “a handsome furnished bar, a commodious club room and every
accommodation for ladies visiting the town for shopping”. In 1894, Edwin
Childs took over the coffee tavern, and later began a cycle and motor car
business on the premises. If you look at the right-hand window pair, you
will see that it is hinged to enable it to be opened. This was Sherborne’s
first motor car show room! |
