Bulls Head

Site of The Bulls Head, 2007

Photo  © Jo Turner

The Bulls Head was situated at 3 South Street. A grade II Listed mid 18th century building. Stucco front possibly altered in the mid 19th century. This is the site of the Bull's Head where on Sunday July 25th 1762 a fire broke out after turf ashes had been thrown on a dung heap. By 7 o’clock that evening, over 140 buildings, most of the town had been destroyed. It was agreed that all the new properties should have tiled roofs, should be properly insured and that their insurance company should provide a fire engine. Where you see thatched houses today they mark the boundary of the fire.
