Londonderry Arms

The Londonderry Arms was situated on Front
Street. |

In the 1950's and early 1960's my parents William and Nora
Robson were the landlords of the Londonderry Arms. We lived on the
premises. Back then it was a miner's pub and women were not allowed in the
main bar, they were relegated to the Select Bar. Older people preferred to
sit in the Snug. The pub was owned by Westoes Brewery and beer was
delivered to the cellar in huge oak barrels. Outside there were stables and
other outhouses. The stables still had tack hanging in them. At the back
there was a small field owned by the pub and the milkman grazed his horse
there. Once a week there was a dance where a live band would play in the
music room upstairs. I have lots of happy memories of growing up in the
Londonderry Arms, but unfortunately have no photographs. |
