The Gas Light was situated at the corner of Tyne
Street and Commercial Road. This pub was demolished in 2008 to make way
for the New Tyne Crossing. It was previously known as The Commercial Hotel and The
Tunnel Tavern. |

Ironically The Commercial” was the
first pub I ever had a pint in, out of the way by the Tyne tunnel entrance.
Sixteen years old and the IPA was four old pence a pint ( about two pence
today) that would have been in 1963. The Commercial was re- named the Tunnel
Tavern ( for obvious reasons). My wife and I bought the Tunnel Tavern in
1985, closed it down for a few months, totally re- designed it in a “
Victorian fashion” and re- named it “The Gaslight”. Work commitments made us
to sell the pub on in 1987. So sorry to see so much good history demolished. |
