Rolling Mill

The Rolling Mill was situated on Western Road. This pub is now used as a childrens nursery.

I was there in 1982, as a young Romanian cadet embarked in a vessel loading coal at a Jarrow pier. In those days there was a regular trade with coal from UK to Romania and the loading ports were Jarrow and Bari (Newport, Wales). Six or seven Romanian vessels (with Romanian crew) ensured the trade. People in Jarrow were eagerly expecting each new call of a Romanian vessel there,
knowing that a new transport of vodca and brandy comes along and that wild parties are about to begin, again.
There were difficult times in the UK then, with Maggie in control and coal mines closing, with the war in Falkland- but also with Diane and Charles preparing for wedding.
I remember the Rolling Mill layout, furniture, the billiards table, even the kitchen at the first floor, some of the bartenders (pretty, blonde girls),
some of the regular clients with whom I used to raise glasses..
