Pallion Inn

The Pallion Inn was situated on St Lukes Terrace.
My grandad , Alf dodsworth Baker , lived in Pallion c1937 - 42. I was always told he used to play piano in the pallion inn and was the life & soul of it. He was a delivery driver / car mechanic with a love of motorbikes.
Then the war came, my mam was only 2 in 1942 and the story goes that after leave, on his way back to catch the train to get back to his regiment he called into the Park Inn , he had uniform & big coat on with snow on shoulders. My nanas sister rita was a barmaid there and said he came in quietly , she asked what he was having and he sat down & quietly wept. She'd never seen him cry before. He was going to el alamein ,tank regiment and as we believe now, he probably knew what awaited.
He was killed in 2nd battle of el alamein. Probably had his last drink in his home town in the Park Inn.
Probably many stories like that, different times, community, comfort.
