The Harrow Inn was situated at the junction of Fen Lane and
Dunnings Lane. |

All though I never went to this pub, I
remember it in the 1960's as a youngster. Coming home from seeing
relations at Basildon, late at night, my dad use to drive back to Romford,
across Bulphan Fen. The pub had many coloured lights around the outside,
and in the dark of night I remember seeing them from along way off. And as
we went past the pub and drove away I can still remember looking back and
looking until I could see them no more.
It is strange, as over the years I knew many
who went to this pub, but somehow I never got there. When ever I went past
it daytime or evening it was always busy.

We used to go there in the late 60’s for a quiet drink in
the evening but at that time it was quite a popular pub to visit.
Does anyone remember the mynah bird that was outside the pub don’t think
it talked though if it did it never did when we visited !

The Harrow was run by Don & Ethel who were good
friends of my grandparents George & Mollie from East Ham. Ethel's name is
still over the door at the back of the pub. |

I remember this pub from the very early 1970s as
a young sales rep for Ind Coope based in Romford. The landlady, Ethel
Butcher, had been widowed by then, but continued to run the pub virtually on
her own. She was a kind soul who once helped me during a promotion by
ordering an enormous quantity of bottled shandy - must have taken years for
it to get rid of! |

I remember the Harrow well as it used to be a favourite venue for first
dates (mainly for car owners as it was a bit remote). Used to get really
packed at the weekend - I loved it. |
