The Three Cups was
situated on Springfield Road. This pub is now used as a restaurant. |

During the summer of 1972 a friend of mine and myself spent a
couple of days at The Three Cups. We were made welcome by Les and all the
staff. We enjoyed real English breakfast, all kinds of beer ( lager, DD,
Guinness ....) and evenings with country music. |

I stayed at
The Three Cups Pub in Chelmsford for a week's holiday during the summer of
1975 with my mum & dad (sadly departed) & my elder brother.
I was only 10 at the time but my older brother who was 18 was very impressed
we were staying in and above a pub!
My memories are of us commuting into London by train to do touristy things
and hearing 'I'm Not in Love' by 10cc being played on the radio seemingly
constantly as it was number 1 in the charts at the time.
The Three Cups seemed to get a lot of off duty prison officers drinking in
there, not too surprising as from memory it was pretty near the prison but
what does surprise me looking back was that they were allowed to drink in
uniform? I doubt if in our 'no pleasure allowed society' of today this would
still actually be allowed?
I particularly remember one prison officer who brought his prison dog in
with him...a huge black Alsatian on a big chain - the dog seemed bigger than
me!
Happy days, I wish I could relive them...sad to see The Three Cups isn't a
pub anymore. I guess yet another victim of the 'happy times' we're now
living in? |

My parents were friendly with the publican Mr. Les Harwood, a friendly
man, with family running the large popular Pub. They even got invited by
my parents to go on holiday together. My sister and friends in the area
had some nice evenings at a folk club there, and a dance or two with
live music. It was fun for young adults. |
