The Chequers was situated at the corner of Chequers Lane and
Ripple Road (A13). This pub
dates back to at least 1775 when it was on the corner of Broad Street and
Ford Road. In 1810 it moved to the junction of Chequers Lane and Ripple
Road. It was demolished in 1987 and a Halfords store was built on the site
as part of Merrielands Retail
Park. However the name Chequers Corner is still used for the area. I
only drank once in the Chequers on a Friday night in the mid 1970s. It
struck me a one of the most decrepit pubs I have ever been in with with
wallpaper peeling away from the wall. Most of the customers appeared to be
the night shift at nearby Ford's car factory getting drunk before work. |
