The Royal Oak was situated at 715 Green Lane.

This pub dated back to 1844. It closed in 2001 and was subsequently demolished with a block of flats built on the site. A nearby minicab firm is still called Royal Oak Cabs.

Name Dates Comments
Carol Morgan (nee Doherty) 1972-1973 I used to work here as barmaid and staff training until they found out I was underage.
Steve Burgess 1972-1974 I worked here for a couple of years and was a customer for about four. Live bands behind the horseshoe shaped bar meant very noisy nights for the bar staff,
Dee 1991 I used to go here to see Don Harvey back then and Roy Davis ran the pub, before they turned pub into flats
Syd Fox 1961-1970 I used to go to the dance hall above the pub every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday when they had live groups such as The Rocking Berries, Shane Fenton (later to be Alvin Stardust) and many others before they changed it into a Disco. They also built a music hall stage downstairs in the main bar where I saw Mike Reid do a comedy act.
Alan Giles 1970s A group of us used to come from Laindon for live music and girls, a girl group used to end the night with 'Dedicated to the one I love' (While I'm far away from you my baby, whisper a little prayer for you my baby ect ect) If you hadn't pulled by this time, no good.
Jeff Martin 1954/1965 I lived behind this pub at No 1 Fossway. Most Wednesday evenings my elder brother used to go to the jazz club which was in the function room upstairs. In summer I used to lay in bed with windows opening, listening to the bands that used to go there. Later, I was old enough to go for a drink but also to the jazz club.
