The Green Gate was situated at the junction of
Eastern Avenue and Horns Road. Closed in the 1980s, it is now used as a
McDonalds. |

We used to be under age drinkers at The Green
Gate, around 1977 onwards. More so, every Friday night we used to frequent
the adjoining disco which was called Oscars. I’d stagger home afterwards
with a belly full of Worthington E topped off with a few Pernod and
Blackcurrant chasers. We knew how to live back then!! |

We used to jive every Friday night at
the annexe to the Greengate pub in around 1964. There was a regular bank who
I though was Johnny and the Tempests and their signature tune was of course
Johnny be Good!! It was often quite rough and tough with regular police
raids ( we were all underage and had to remember our year of birth to be 18)
and we saw fights and brawls, even girls on the floor pulling each others
hair. But it was a fabulous time. Anyone remember about the band?? |
