The Fox was situated on Fox
Road. This was a small attractive basic country pub in a remote location
North of Chelmsford. It was popular with cyclists and walkers. An ex-Ridleys
pub, it closed in summer 1997. The beer was served on gravity from a small
serving hatch. In the mid seventies it was run by two old women and later
for a while by a Chelmsford CAMRA branch official. Before closing it was run
by a qualified chef who did a good job of serving quality meals while his
wife looked after the beer. |

My brother and I used to frequent this
wonderful little gem in the early 70’s.
It was one of those places where everyone sat round the wall having one
conversation – which stopped when you went in!
It was buried in such a maze of lanes and crossroads that we were never
quite sure where it was; we had a family joke that it used to move around –
we’d set off from our home in Good Easter (only about 3 or 4 miles away!)
and say to ourselves “I wonder where it will be tonight, and whether we’ll
find it”.
We usually did, and had a great time there drinking the Ridleys and chatting
to the regulars, once they’d recovered from the shock of our arrival… New
people! Whatever next?
I weep for the loss of Ridley’s beer, our first and greatest favourite. |
